HOMECROFT Eagle Puppets

Mary Plaster-multi-media artist-is leading 12 students at Homecroft Elementary in an after-school program. The students are molding a large soaring eagle puppet, as well as eagle hats for the Parade. The eagle inspired by the HOMECROFT EAGLES mascot, in celebration of their final school year.

ABOUT THE ARTMOVES PARADE

Everyone loves a parade and Ordway Center's Flint Hills International Children's Festival is throwing one Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 1:00 pm. in downtown Saint Paul, MN.

The Festival parade began with the idea of creating wearable, moveable art pieces from everyday objects and has evolved into a collection of art in motion. Festival goers are treated to giant puppets, kites, flags, music, ARTbikes, and other creations envisioned by community artists as the ARTmoves Parade journeys around Rice Park.

The foundation of participation and art-creation for the Parade is in community organizations. Ordway Center partners with Community and Recreation Centers across the Twin Cities to offer artist residencies in after-school programs. Youth of all ages work with Twin Cities artists to learn an art-form and create their own unit of the Parade. Community artists and organizations also participate in the Parade, continuing to make it one of the Festival highlights.

ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The Flint Hills International Children's Festival, presented by Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, brings the world of performing and visual arts to downtown Saint Paul. The Festival began in 2001 presenting the best performing arts in the world for child audiences while remaining accessible to all socioeconomic backgrounds. As an extension to Education and Community Engagement at Ordway Center, the goal is not only to introduce children to the world of performing arts, but also to explore the cultures from which they derive.

The Festival provides children an unparalleled opportunity for cross-cultural experiences that promote the use of arts for discovery of human commonalities. The world’s top artists for children perform puppetry, dance, music, drama, and acrobatics, while expressing the common hopes, struggles, joys, and sorrows children all over the world experience. Each year, more than 33,000 patrons attend the Festival and it has engaged more than 240,000 people over the past six years. The Festival has been named one of the region’s top ten festivals by the Minnesota Office of Tourism. The week-long celebration is broken into two components, the School Week and the Festival Family Weekend.
